Permissions are essential in a multi-user system where users have different tasks and roles. OpenCms features an advanced permission system. You can group users, assign roles to them and adjust permissions on each resource in the VFS. You can even make up various organizational units to decentralize user management and you can also decide which users can see, read or write content of a given type.

The topics listed here provide background on all the facets of permissions in OpenCms.

Topics on permissions
  • OpenCms distinguishes five permissions, each assignable to users or groups for every single resource. Learn how the permission system works.

  • Roles, groups and OUs - learn how a user's permissions are set.

  • Each OpenCms user acts in a special role - reaching from root administrators to element authors. Learn about the available roles and the permissions implied by a role.

  • Permissions can be set for explorer types. They specify who can add, edit or view a resource of the type. Learn about these permissions here.
